On Saturday 8 February 2025, Sound Bridge connected Shibetsu, Gothenburg and Detroit across three different time zones, exploring the impact of soul music and the ways Detroit Soul has echoed across borders and influenced local Japanese and Swedish music scenes.

This zine documents the exchange through interviews, personal stories, photographs and reflections from the participating musicians and DJs. At its heart is the music community of Shibetsu, a small fishing town in northern Hokkaido, where record enthusiasts and DJs have built a local culture through music, friendship and collaboration.

The publication introduces the Shibetsu-based DJs Chiyo, Kanaya, Shambo and Souko, exploring their relationships to DJ culture, vinyl collecting, soul, funk, jazz and Detroit’s musical history. Their voices reveal a music scene shaped by curiosity, local connections and an ongoing exchange with other places and generations.

The zine also connects three cultural spaces: Musicbar Site in Shibetsu, Peckham Soul in Gothenburg and Talking Dolls in Detroit. Together they form part of a wider Sound Bridge network in which music becomes a starting point for dialogue, cultural exchange and collaboration across geographical distance.

The publication closes by reflecting on communication, listening and rhythm. Drawing connections between human conversation, musical interaction and the phenomenon of synchronisation, it considers how people can gradually find a shared rhythm — even when separated by continents, cultures and time zones.
